The construction of green schools in China has begun since 1996. At that time, three administrations, including Ministry of Propagation, Ministry of Education and State Environmental Protection Administration of China, promulgated the document, Action Plan of Environmental Education and Propagation of China (1996~2010). The concept and contents of green schools were mentioned in the document. Since 1996, especially after 2000, the development of green schools is very rapid. There are about sixteen thousands of green schools in our country now (refer to the Center of Environmental Education and Communication of EPA). It shows that construction of green schools helps forward the environmental quality of our students and promotes sustainable development of our society. However there are still many problems in the green schools constructing. For example, there are short of environmental management in many schools. It leads to the environmental pollution control and resource saving not to be paid attention, on the other hand, the green schools building was short of the plans, efficient ways and participation of the students. So, environmental management in the schools is put forward. School environmental management is different from society in the contents and methods because of educational function of schools. However, the environmental pollution should be controlled. In order to make school environmental management better and achieve the objects of green schools construction, we make use of the thought of ISO14000. The schools are asked to provide an environmental management system based on ISO14001.This is a new thinking for green schools in China. Though the requirement is also in The Green Schools Guideline, which was compiled by the Center of Environmental Education and Communication of EPA, most of the green schools didn’t develop the plans for environmental management. One of main reasons is there is no requirement of environmental management in the local criteria.
