1. The concept and basic ways of school environmental management

In China, the environmental management was for environmental pollution control in

enterprises at the beginning. With deepening the environmental protection, the range of environmental management is enlarged to the whole society. Through working hard, China government had published many environmental management laws and documents and we have contributed much for environmental protection in our country.

    School environmental management is a part of social environmental management. But, it has characteristics itself because the school is the place where there are many students and with major task, education. Actually, it is coincidence with the essence of environmental management. So, the school environmental management may be defined that according to the basic theory of management and ecology, we take various ways, such as making economic and legal policies, raising the level of science, technology and education, making use of TV and newspapers, and so on. The environmental management is planed and implemented in schools so that the behaviors of students and teachers could be changed. Both schools and environment are developed, and the high quality students will be cultivated.

The school environmental management should include several main ways as follows:

(1)Laying the environmental management into the system of school management;

(2)Providing the system for environmental management and making it work;

(3)Let the students, teachers and community know the policies of school environmental management, and encourage them to be involved activities;

(4)Changing their behaviors so as to promote school environmental management;

(5)Constructing the green school culture through teaching, greening and making activities, etc.

 

Actually, there are the ways of school environmental management in these schools. It is

important that the system for environmental management should be developed in the schools. In additions to, environmental education should be a part of school environmental management, which is contained in the environmental management and enhances the environmental management. Both of them can help each other. For instance, when the environmental policies are made in schools, the students and teachers have to know the context of environmental management. Their environmental awareness could be raised. At the same time, the high environmental awareness of students and teachers is helpful to school environmental management.

   

2.How to providing the system for school environmental management

ISO14000 Standard is compiled by the International Standard Organization for protecting our environment and raising the level of environmental management of any organization. Its features are willingness, participation of everyone, management of the whole production process and asking the relevant organizations to protect environment, etc. ISO14001 is the main Standard of the ISO14000. It asks the organizations to develop a system for environmental management and make it work. The better the system works, the better environmental protection and management will carry out.

       If the organizations are going to provide the environmental management system, they have to finish the following works: training about environment, finding and evaluating the environmental factors, making the environmental policies, establishing the administration and implementing the environmental management, compiling the documents, etc. At the same time, if the organizations want to get a certificate about ISO14001, they can apply for it. Generally speaking, because of the finance shortage, the schools are not willing to apply for it. In China, several schools have applied for certificate. One of them is a kindergarden in Shanghai.
